Are We Spending or Investing the Currency of Our Being?

Are We Spending or Investing the Currency of Our Being?

Every moment we live is a transaction. But instead of dollars or coins, we trade in the currency of our being—our attention, our energy, our time, our breath. The question is: are we spending or investing?

Spending is easy. It’s reactionary. It happens when we scroll, distract, numb, or perform. We spend our energy trying to escape discomfort, chasing fleeting pleasure, or maintaining an identity shaped by expectation rather than essence. In contrast, investing requires awareness. It asks us to be present, even when it’s uncomfortable. To lean into our growth, even when it’s messy. To see each experience—painful, pleasurable, or mundane—as part of the unfolding.

Through my journey, I’ve come to understand that life is not here to punish us, but to reflect us. Our circumstances become mirrors—revealing where we are whole and where we have yet to return to wholeness. They are sacred invitations to look deeper, beyond the rational mind, into the imagination of our becoming. Who are we becoming? How are we becoming? Why are we becoming?

When we live from this place, our doing becomes an extension of our being. It becomes an experience rather than a performance—fluid, natural, aligned. We begin to unify the mind, heart, and behavior. And this unified being becomes the bridge between the spiritual and the physical—bringing forth the sacred into everyday life.

Even our distractions are investments. But what are we investing in? A better tomorrow than yesterday? Or are we investing in the perpetuation of unmet expectations and illusions of control?

This is not a judgment. It’s an invitation.

To pause. To observe. To reorient.

What are you paying your attention to?
Because where your attention goes, your life grows.

Reflection Exercise:

1. Journal Prompt:
Where in my life am I spending my energy out of habit, fear, or distraction?
Where am I investing in alignment, presence, and growth?

2. Awareness Check-In:
Each day this week, take 1–2 minutes at three different times (morning, afternoon, evening) to ask:

  • What am I paying attention to right now?
  • Is this investment nourishing who I wish to become?

3. Mantra for Integration:
“I honor the currency of my being. I invest in presence, truth, and becoming.”

Suggested Supporting Imagery:

  1. Conceptual visual: A glowing figure standing at a crossroads—one path dim and cluttered (distraction, escape), the other radiant and clear (presence, becoming).
  2. Symbolic visual: A hand releasing golden light or seeds into the earth—symbolizing conscious investment.
  3. Minimalist graphic: Two coins—one labeled “Spending” with a fading aura, the other labeled “Investing” with growing roots and light.
