Growing up, I was like so many kids—immersed in the worlds of “cowboys and Indians,” “army man,” and “cops and robbers.” I remember running through yards, ducking behind trees, and choosing sides without questioning why. It was exciting, playful, and, at the time, completely innocent in my eyes. Like countless others, I had no idea I was rehearsing roles and stories deeply woven into our collective consciousness.

Looking back, I see how these games did more than fill afternoons—they planted seeds about power, belonging, authority, and difference. We drew invisible lines between “us” and “them,” learning unconsciously who was the hero, who was the villain, and how stories of justice or conquest were supposed to unfold. We didn’t realize that many of these scripts were oversimplified, one-sided, or born from misunderstanding and stereotype.

As an adult, I recognize how easy it is to carry these narratives forward—sometimes reenacting them in obvious ways, and other times letting them shape our worldviews beneath the surface. We see echoes of these old games in our attitudes toward difference, our reactions to conflict, and our sense of “right” and “wrong.” The stories we absorbed as children continue to influence our choices—unless we shine a light of awareness on them.

My own journey has been about pausing, looking within, and gently questioning those stories. What if we could lay down the toy guns and costumes—not with shame, but with curiosity and compassion? What if we could honor all the histories and voices left out of our childhood games, and choose new ways of seeing ourselves and each other?
