The Cost Worth Paying Participation, Purification, and the Life We Truly Desire It was once…

Beyond Awakening: The Humility of Being Human
Beyond Awakening: The Humility of Being Human
By Chris “Yellow Owl” Albaugh
With so many people speaking about awakening, consciousness, healing, enlightenment, self-mastery, and transformation, I often find myself reflecting on a different question:
Can we awaken beyond ourselves, who we think weve been, are or be-coming?
Can we awaken beyond the belief that life revolves around us?
Can we awaken beyond the stories that tell us we are somehow more important, more special, or more necessary than another?
The Journey Inward Is Valuable
The journey inward is valuable.
Learning to observe our thoughts, understand our emotions, heal our wounds, and recognize our conditioning is a powerful part of human evolution.
Many spend years learning how to master their reactions, regulate their emotions, and become more conscious of how they participate in life.
Yet somewhere along that path, another invitation appears.
An invitation not simply to awaken to ourselves.
But to awaken from ourselves.
Awakening From the Illusion of Importance
To awaken from the illusion that our story is the center of existence.
To awaken from the belief that the world needs us in the way our ego would like to believe.
To awaken from the desire to be special.
To awaken from the need to be remembered.
To awaken from the subtle attachment to becoming someone.
Because even spirituality can become another identity.
Awakened. Healer. Teacher. Master. Guide. Leader. Seeker. Victim. Survivor.
Each label may offer meaning for a season.
Yet nature carries none of them.
Nature Does Not Need a Title
The river does not call itself enlightened.
The mountain does not declare itself awakened.
The forest does not seek recognition for providing shelter.
The sun does not rise hoping to be acknowledged.
They simply fulfill their nature.
Perhaps humanity’s next evolution is not becoming more extraordinary.
Perhaps it is remembering how to participate as naturally as everything else.
Awakening Beyond Self-Mastery
Many people awaken to themselves.
Far fewer awaken to relationship.
Far fewer awaken to how they relate to disappointment, uncertainty, conflict, grief, success, nature, community, and one another.
Many can find peace in solitude.
Many can speak beautifully about consciousness.
Yet the greater initiation often begins when another human enters the room.
When expectations are unmet.
When betrayal appears.
When fear surfaces.
When life refuses to cooperate with our preferred narrative.
Then awareness is no longer a philosophy.
It becomes embodied.
Life itself becomes the teacher.
There Is No Participation Trophy for Being Human
And perhaps this is where we begin discovering that there is no participation trophy for being human.
No award for integrity.
No medal for compassion.
No certificate for kindness.
No spiritual ranking system that determines who has arrived.
There is only participation.
Moment by moment.
Choice by choice.
Relationship by relationship.
How do we relate to ourselves?
How do we relate to others?
How do we relate to uncertainty?
How do we relate to the Earth that continually sustains us?
How do we relate to those who see the world differently than we do?
These questions may reveal more about awakening than any title ever could.
We Matter No More and No Less
Because perhaps the deepest awakening is not awakening to our power.
Perhaps it is awakening from our importance.
Not that we are worthless.
Not that we do not matter.
But that we matter no more and no less than everything else.
The tree matters.
The insect matters.
The child matters.
The elder matters.
The wealthy matter.
The poor matter.
The one who agrees with us matters.
The one who opposes us matters.
The known and the unknown.
The celebrated and the forgotten.
Each participates in the unfolding of existence.
No greater.
No lesser.
Simply different expressions of the same mystery.
The Freedom of Humility
Humanity survived before us.
The rivers flowed before us.
The stars illuminated the night sky before our birth.
And they will continue long after our departure.
The Earth does not require our permission to turn.
The seasons do not ask for our approval.
Life continues.
And strangely, there is freedom in this realization.
The burden of proving ourselves begins to dissolve.
The need to be right softens.
The desire to be seen as special loosens its grip.
The compulsion to save everyone relaxes.
The fear of being forgotten loses its power.
We no longer have to carry the weight of believing the world depends upon us.
Instead, we become free to participate.
Free to contribute.
Free to create.
Free to love.
Free to serve.
Not because we are indispensable.
But because it is our nature to do so.
Remembering Our Authentic Nature
A flower does not bloom because the world needs it.
It blooms because blooming is what it does.
The river flows because flowing is what it does.
The sun shines because shining is what it does.
Likewise, perhaps our purpose is not to become important.
Perhaps our purpose is to become authentic.
To walk in right relationship with ourselves.
To walk in right relationship with one another.
To walk in right relationship with nature.
To stand firmly in our standards without requiring others to become different.
To remain humble without becoming passive.
To remain compassionate without abandoning discernment.
To participate consciously in the mystery of existence.
The Humility of Being Human
Because awakening may not be about transcending humanity.
It may be about fully embracing it.
Not escaping life.
Participating in it.
Not becoming extraordinary.
Remembering what we have always been.
A temporary expression of awareness.
A living part of nature.
A human being among human beings.
Neither above nor below.
Neither greater nor lesser.
Simply here.
Breathing.
Learning.
Participating.
And perhaps there is no title greater than that.
Reflection Invitation
Where in your life are you still carrying the weight of needing to be special, needed, right, recognized, or remembered?
What might become possible if you released the need to be more than another and simply allowed yourself to participate more honestly, humbly, and fully with life?
